Hollywood movies are known for being totally inaccurate and that does hold true for fight scenes when someone is attacked by someone else. In the movies most often the victim will hit their attacker and then just stand there and look at them. This is not the thing to do! Standing and looking at them will only give them time to come back to their senses and lose the advantage that came with a successful first blow.
One of the first things taught by instructors of combat self defense are moves that use more than one punch or kick or even a combination of several. These combinations will keep the advantage with the victim and keep the criminal who attacked them down. Getting the bad guy down and making sure they stay down is the key to not only surviving an attack but helping to make sure that justice will be had.
Of course the other option after successfully landing a punch or kick is to flee the scene while they cannot follow you. There is no harm or anything wrong with turning to run in order to put a quick end to an attack. But the key for either approach is to not just stand there watching to see what they will do next. Anyone who wants to learn martial arts will tell you what they will do next and that is get up. And when they do you can rest assured that they will not be happy that you hit them in the first place, so exacting revenge will be on their mind.
If you get the advantage with an attacker do not just stand there and let them get that advantage back no matter what you choose to do.
